What are Co-Occuring Disorders?

Those who have substance use disorders as well as mental health disorders are diagnosed as having co-occurring disorders, or what’s often referred to as dual disorders or a dual diagnosis. When a substance use disorder and a psychiatric disorder are co-occurring, they can often differ in severity, and the severity of each disorder can also change over a period of time. Patients with a combination of disorders may experience more intense challenges and in return, demand longer periods of treatment.
